Arthur William Matthew Carney also known as Art Carney was an American actor, who won the 1974 Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the movie Harry and Tonto. His performance as Ed Norton, opposite Jackie Gleason, in the sitcom, The Honeymooners, is still etched in the memory of viewers.
Interested in impersonation and acting from a young age, Art Carney pursued the same as a career after his preliminary education. Initially he worked on radio shows which included the successful show Pot o’ Gold. During the World War II, he served in the US Army. He was wounded at the Battle of Normandy and was hospitalized for nine months.
Along with appearing in television shows and guest appearances in various series, he also acted in films and made Broadway appearances He was known for his excellent comic timing, and though he never considered himself a comedian, he was considered among the finest comedian actors of his time. His talent earned him several awards like the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award and the Pasinetti Award.
