Tony Dungy has a number of firsts to his credit – he is the first African-American head coach to win the Super Bowl, first NFL head coach to defeat all 32 NFL teams, youngest assistant coach in NFL history at the age of 25 and the youngest coordinator at the age of 28. Furthermore, he is the third person in NFL history to win a title as a player and as a head coach.
Proficient at the game since young, his playing prowess first came to limelight during his years at the University of Minnesota. Interestingly, despite his outstanding talent and exceptional skills he was not drafted into any of the NFL teams. Eventually, he secured himself a place with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and later with San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. Post his three seasons as a player, Dungy turned to serve as the assistant coach in his alma mater.
His professional coaching experience commenced in 1980 as he was recruited as an assistant coach. He soon made his way to become the head coach in 1996. In 2007 he created history by being the first African-American head coach to win the Super Bowl, when his team Indianapolis Colts outplayed Chicago Bears.
